Job DescriptionRQ Construction is a growing commercial
Design-Build company, whose primary customer is the Department of

governmental Design-Build economy. We now have a national presence
with current projects approaching $300M, spanning coast to coast,
including U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.We are seeking a
qualified Mate candidate to join our Tugboat crew at U.S. Naval
Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Mate will assist the Tugboat
Captain in navigation and towing functionalities of the RQ owned
barge carrying materials into Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The tugboat
mate, along with the captain and crew, will live on Guantanamo Bay
when not on voyage and will make regular voyages to Jamaica and to
Florida. This position may also assist with vessel operations and
may be asked to do additional tasks as necessary. Job Duties and
Responsibilities
- Stand watches on vessels during specified periods while vessels
are under way.
- Assume command of vessels in the event that ships' masters
become incapacitated.
- Steer vessels, using navigational devices, such as compasses or
sextants, or navigational aids, such as lighthouses or buoys.
- Determine geographical positions of ships, using lorans,
azimuths of celestial bodies, or computers, and use this
information to determine the course and speed of a ship.
- Inspect equipment, such as cargo-handling gear, lifesaving
equipment, visual-signaling equipment, or fishing, towing, or
dredging gear, to detect problems.
- Observe loading or unloading of cargo or equipment to ensure
that handling and storage are performed according to
specifications.
- Participate in activities related to maintenance of vessel
security.
- Arrange for ships to be stocked, fueled, or repaired.
- Supervise crew members in the repair or replacement of
defective gear or equipment.
- Supervise crews in cleaning or maintaining decks,
superstructures, or bridges.
- Observe water from ships' mastheads to advise on navigational
direction. Experience and Education Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED is the preferred minimum formal
education for this position
- A fire-fighting and controlling certificate
- Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and
strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security
operations for the protection of people, data, property, and
institutions.
- Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods
by air, rail, sea, or road, including the relative costs and
benefits.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses,
repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents,
government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the
democratic political process.
- Ability to work rotational 12 hour watch
- Ability to work 6 weeks on, 3 week off, revised as necessary
Required Licenses and Certifications
- Merchant Mariners Credentials (MMC)
- Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping
(STCW)
- Driver's license Physical Requirements
- Must be able to tolerate rough seas, vibrations, heat, harsh
weather conditions, confined spaces, and high noise levels.
- Work will frequently require individuals to push, pull, bend or
stand for long periods of time, and climb ladders that have
capacity limits of 300 lbs.
- Must be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies
and parts up to 50 lbs. unassisted. We are an equal opportunity
