JOB RELATIONSHIPS The Courier/Phlebotomist is under the direct supervision of the Administrative Director of Lab Services. To meet position responsibilities, the Courier/Phlebotomist will be required to work closely and in coordination with physicians, staff and administration of associated facilities and other hospital departments. DEFINITION OF POSITION The Courier/Phlebotomist will function as phlebotomist and coordinator of laboratory specimens for Carteret General facilities or associates as assigned. In addition the Courier/Phlebotomist is responsible for the general delivery and transport of supplies, reports, minor equipment, x-rays, and any other items as assigned both to and from these facilities. # The Courier/Phlebotomist will perform functions related to specimen processing, e.g. medical necessity review, order entry, etc. Also, the Courier/Phlebotomist will assist with office and clinical functions and with point of care testing in serviced facilities as appropriate and as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Professional High school graduate or equivalent Medical assistant or phlebotomy training. Two years experience, as a phlebotomist in a hospital setting preferred. Must have a valid North Carolina driver#s license with good driving record. Possesses a car to use for courier responsibilities amongst facilities. Mathematical, verbal, and written skills at the high school level. Personal Maintains good health, grooming, and professional conduct. Excellent customer relation skills. Demonstrates the desire and ability to cooperate with and/or under the direction of others and shows the ability to follow directions accurately. Possesses a sense of responsibility and honesty. Must have strong initiative and be able to manage multiple functions independently. Demonstrates an appreciation of and desire to be part of a health care team dedicated to providing optimal patient care. Physical Interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with physicians, other hospital personnel, patients, and visitors. Ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed. Also, strong ability to move hands and fingers easily and skillfully is required. Basic knowledge of phlebotomy techniques. Basic knowledge of laboratory terminology including the variety of collection devices/tubes and their purpose. Demonstrated ability with computers. Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazardous body fluids, and hazardous chemicals. Sufficient noise and/or interruptions to cause distraction and stress. Hazardous working conditions in which individual is exposed to definite health risk through contact with moving instrumentation, chemicals and/or body fluids. Mandatory use of PPE, e.g. lab coats, jackets, and gloves made of various materials, which may be potential allergens. Frequent standing, stooping, and walking required. Lifting of up to 50 pounds and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Also pushing and pulling objects required. Regular use of a keyboard required. Possibility of back strain from bending over patients.
