Treatment and professional duties includes:

Initial Psychiatric evaluation of patients to establish diagnosis and management plan; order pertinent laboratory and radiology tests; complete a thorough safety assessment to include a suicide risk assessment and other appropriate requirements per MH Department policies; establish a proper disposition of these patients; and complete treatment plans as appropriate.Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment. For further information, visit: http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ous/international/usnei/us/edlite-visitus-forrecog.html.As one of the largest health care systems in the nation, VA offers providers a broad range of practice options, including general medicine and primary care, along with many specialties and sub specialties. Duties include; admitting, evaluating, diagnosing, treating, providing consultation and performing history and physical examinations to adult patients presenting with mental, behavioral, addictive or emotional disorders, e.g., psychoses, depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders, adjustment disorders, behavior modification, mental problems related to addictive disorders and the special and emotional problems related to addiction and substance abuse (alcoholism and other drug dependencies, such as psychoactive drug use and addiction,) utilizing all forms of psychological and social treatment including medications. Privileges include providing consultation with physicians in other fields regarding mental, behavioral or emotional disorders, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, family therapy, behavior modification, and emergency psychiatry as well as the ordering of diagnostic, laboratory tests, and prescribe medications.

Work Schedule: Full-time, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (Alternate Tour of duty may be required to include evening hours and weekends)

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.


    Preferred Experience: Academic experience to assist with the developing functions of the MHSL in the training of residents and interns and the development of scholarly activities.

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; straight pulling; pushing; reaching; both hands; walking ; standing; bending; near vision; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotional stability required.
