Job Description:
Description SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES : This class is
responsible for lead work in diagnosing mechanical problems and
repairing a variety of equipment including vehicles, trucks,
construction vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Maintenance
section of PWC. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to,
delegating repair tasks and work orders to lower level fleet
maintenance technicians, tracking productivity and progress of
lower level technicians, conduct quality control checks on
completed work, disassembling/re-assembling motors,
repairing/replacing worn/defective parts;
testing/reassembling/adjusting repaired equipment;
adjusting/realigning brakes; repairing/replacing defective wiring
for ignition or lighting systems; rebuilding alternators/starters;
performing major overhaul of engines/clutches/transmissions,
differentials, brakes/steering mechanisms, and related mechanical
units/parts; driving/operating vehicles in performing work
assignments/responsibilities; completing required records. Operates
under general supervision of the Fleet Shop Supervisor in
accordance with established policies and procedures. Extended
hours, call back and on call availability are required. Performs
related work as required. EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Fleet vehicle,
manual/power tools, machinery/welding equipment, communication, and
other equipment, as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS,
AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and
procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of
gasoline and diesel engines; skill in use of various types of
testing/repairing equipment; skill in diagnosing of mechanical
problems and repair techniques; skill in locating/correcting
defects in motor vehicles/equipment; ability to adapt available
tools and parts to specific repair problems; ability to
read/interpret manuals/diagrams/sketches of complex equipment;
ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
with all levels of employees. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (either) (A)
Graduation from an accredited two year community/technical college,
with an associates degree/certification in automotive technology
and a minimum of four (4) years of experience in automotive repair
and maintenance, including gasoline and diesel powered equipment,
which includes lead mechanics responsibilities; OR (B) Graduation
from high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and a minimum of eight (8) years of experience as defined
in (A) above; OR (C) An equivalent combination of education,
training, and experience as defined in (A) and (B) above. SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS : Functional Employment Test (FET) required. Must
possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Class A (CDL) Driver’s
License. Must have an ASE Master Certification in Medium/Heavy
Truck or Automobile/Light Truck and maintain qualifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform the essential
functions of the position. SAFETY HAZARDS : Inclement weather,
fluctuating temperatures, noise, odors, oils, chemicals, vibration,
close physical locations and other hazards associated with
automotive work. PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: As required in the Public
Works Commission’s Safety Manual. GRADE 407X $28.34-$37.33/HOUR
